Bryce Underwood announces Michigan's starting quarterback

Blythe Underwood Named Starting Quarterback for Michigan Wolverines

Blythe Underwood is set to kick off this season at Michigan Center. On Monday, Director Sheron Moore announced that the true freshman will be the starting quarterback for the Wolverines, starting this Saturday against New Mexico. Underwood expressed that he views this opportunity as “a chance” rather than something that was handed to him.

Underwood, the top recruit in the 2025 class, decided to reaffirm his commitment to Michigan last November, influenced by a full court press from the coaching staff. His decision to join the Wolverines clearly shows the depth of the recruitment efforts he encountered.

A native of Belleville, Michigan, Underwood is conveniently close to the Wolverines’ campus. It’s worth noting that the football program received support from notable figures, including Tom Brady’s wife and billionaire Larry Ellison, to help persuade him to come to Ann Arbor.

For the Wolverines, sophomore Jayden Davis will serve as the backup quarterback, having appeared in one game in the previous season and participating in various camps this year.

According to reports from the Big Ten Network, Underwood has actually taken the majority of first team reps throughout August. Moore informed the team about the quarterback decision on Sunday.

Reflecting on Underwood’s abilities, Moore highlighted his maturity for an 18-year-old. He noted that while mistakes are inevitable, the team stands ready to support him. Underwood is also making history as the first freshman QB for Michigan since Tate Forcier in 2009.

“The starting quarterback is not just the one who throws the ball first but is also the leader when challenges arise,” Moore emphasized. “He needs to excel in challenging moments.”
