Bryson DeChambeau’s Challenging First Round at the Masters
Bryson DeChambeau had quite the first round at the Masters, which was, um, eventful, to say the least.
The 32-year-old golfer ended the day at four over par, facing some ups and downs. At one point, he accidentally hit a patron with his tee shot on the sixth hole. On the 11th hole, the struggle continued as he battled to escape a bunker, hitting the sand three times before finally getting out.
During the 180-yard par 3, DeChambeau pulled his tee shot to the left, striking a spectator in the foot. Interestingly, the ball bounced toward the hole and landed on the green, which I suppose is a bit of a lucky break.
When he realized what had happened, DeChambeau covered his mouth in surprise. He then walked over, handed the guy a golf ball, and gave him a handshake, a nice gesture, really.
At that point, he was even par and made a remarkable recovery, chipping the ball just three feet from the hole after a lengthy 24-yard shot. He managed to sink the follow-up putt, saving par.
The golfer from Clovis, California, held his ground until the 11th hole, where things went south. His second shot was played from the fairway, aiming toward a green bordered by water and surrounded by bunkers. Unfortunately, his ball rolled right into a bunker.
The first attempt to escape the bunker went only about three yards, barely creeping toward the edge. His second shot was even less successful, seeming to miss the ball altogether. Eventually, on his third try, he finally got out but left the ball about 15 feet from the hole. He ended up making a triple bogey after two putts, taking his score to three over for the day.
DeChambeau’s challenges didn’t stop there. On the 16th hole, he faced a three-putt bogey, moving him to four over. Although he managed to gain a stroke back with a birdie on the 17th, aided by a lovely iron shot that landed eight feet from the hole, it was a brief moment of reprieve.
In the end, he bogeyed the 18th hole and wrapped up the day with a score of four over par, 76. Interestingly, his opening round mirrored last year’s performance, where he shot a 73. However, he rebounded nicely in the following rounds, ultimately tying for fifth after a solid finish on Sunday at 75.
Bryson DeChambeau will tee off again on Friday at 1:20 p.m. ET, hoping to turn things around this time.
