Bryson DeChambeau’s return to the Ryder Cup kicked off with some excitement but ultimately ended with two losses.
Known for his ability to energize fans, DeChambeau delivered a remarkable 344-yard drive that thrilled the crowd. But despite those high moments, he struggled to turn that energy into match wins, contributing to a significant 5½-2½ deficit for the Americans going into Saturday.
“I played good golf, but not enough,” he shared after the afternoon session. “And they made it all.”
This was a tough first outing for DeChambeau at the Home Ryder Cup, especially following his undefeated performance at Whistling Straits in 2021. His switch to LIV Golf post that tournament certainly complicated his return and selection for the team.
Reflecting on his earlier experiences, DeChambeau mentioned feeling a renewed sense of purpose, saying it was “really igniting my stomach” to come back. Yet, he described his first day as “quite disappointing.”
Partnered with Justin Thomas in the Foursomes, they couldn’t keep a lead, allowing Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton to tie after they had gone one up. On the 15th hole, he hit a wayward tee shot, missing the fairway completely, which didn’t help their chances.
In the afternoon, DeChambeau brought the crowd back to life again, even shaking hands with President Donald Trump before their first shot.
He managed to excitedly sink a 6-foot birdie putt, leading to celebrations, but then, unfortunately, missed a birdie attempt on the 13th that left the match tied once more.
There were several misplays scattered throughout both sessions, which compounded the situation. Just two years after hoping for another chance to represent Team USA, much of the initial excitement faded quickly.
Captain Keegan Bradley noted, “He hit a lot of incredible shots,” but emphasized the need for more successful putts. “I think everyone would agree that we have to go out tomorrow and roll those putts, which we didn’t do today.”
