DeChambeau’s Tough Day at the Masters
After a challenging first round at Augusta National, Bryson DeChambeau appeared less than thrilled when questioned about his 3D-printed 5-iron.
The two-time U.S. Open champion had a notable day during his opening round at the Masters. He accidentally struck a fan with his tee shot on the sixth hole and wrestled with three bunker shots on the 11th hole.
In a post-round press interview, he was prompted to discuss the process behind creating his unique clubs, aside from just the driver.
DeChambeau noted that making a club takes approximately “a day and a half.” So, when asked if he was interested in experiencing the club-making process for another one, his response was a straightforward no. “Hmm, no. It has to be USGA compliant. There’s a whole process you have to go through,” he explained.
This particular club is one he designed himself, and he expressed a sense of pride in his innovation. “I’ve realized I have a habitual nature to innovate. Even if I make mistakes, I learn from them,” he stated.
Reflecting on his performance, DeChambeau said he used the club only once during Thursday’s round. Comparatively, he remembered being in the final group last year alongside the eventual champion Rory McIlroy. However, this time, DeChambeau struggled, finishing with a score of 4-over 76, putting him at risk of not advancing.
Despite facing difficulties, DeChambeau has the second-best odds to win the tournament, trailing only Scottie Scheffler.
