Bryson DeChambeau Triumphs at LIV Singapore
Bryson DeChambeau made a notable comeback after a challenging moment in a bunker and a nerve-wracking playoff to clinch victory at LIV Singapore on Sunday. This marks the fourth title of his career in the Saudi-backed series.
In an awkward incident during the third round, DeChambeau stumbled and fell into a sand trap while trying to hit his ball out of the rough on the fifth hole, with large insects buzzing around him. Unfortunately, his shot ended up in another bunker across the course.
With a bogey of 72 in the third round, DeChambeau regrouped, shooting a 66 in the final round and narrowly defeating Richard T. Lee in a playoff. Lee missed a crucial double-footed putt on his fifth shot, which could have extended the tournament into a second playoff round.
This victory marks DeChambeau’s first of the season, having last won at LIV Golf Korea in May against Charles Howell III. His previous successes include wins at LIV Golf Chicago and LIV Golf Greenbrier. Notably, this is also his first win in a 72-hole tournament since his triumph at the U.S. Open at Pinehurst in 2024.
Richard T. Lee was vying to be the first wild card golfer not associated with a team to win a singles championship but fell short when his putt missed the mark, spinning around the cup. “It was a short putt and I wanted to hit it hard, but maybe it was just a bit too hard,” Lee commented, attributing it to adrenaline.
Reflecting on the tournament, DeChambeau mentioned being reminded of John Daly’s near miss against Tiger Woods in the 2005 World Golf Championship playoffs. “It’s a strange feeling to observe it firsthand, especially as a benefactor of a positive outcome,” he said. “This win is something I’ll cherish forever. Even if I hadn’t won, I was pleased with how I played in the last few days.”
Currently, DeChambeau holds the second position in the LIV Golf rankings, just behind Jon Rahm.
