BTS Members Complete Military Service
Four members of the popular Korean boy band BTS wrapped up their mandatory military service recently, greeting a crowd of eager fans and expressing gratitude towards the military. They also encouraged their followers to show kindness and support to soldiers.
BTS, known for their immense success, has garnered international recognition and set numerous records in the music industry, becoming a significant part of Korean history. Before enlisting, they had millions of album sales and made history on music charts and award nominations, including the Grammys.
The group took a break in 2023 to fulfill their military obligations, as South Korean law requires all healthy men to serve for 18 to 21 months, typically before turning 28. Although BTS members were granted an extension until age 30, most opted to enlist earlier.
They initiated their break after supporting President Joe Biden in his efforts against racism during a visit to the White House.
Jimin and Jungkook, the latest members to be discharged on Wednesday, completed 18 months of service with the Army’s 5th Infantry Division Artillery Brigade. Their return attracted a large celebration, which seemed to make them a bit anxious.
“I haven’t been in front of the camera for a while, and I’m a bit embarrassed without makeup,” Jungkook joked.
Jimin took the opportunity to express admiration for the soldiers and urged fans to show appreciation for military personnel they encounter. He shared that, finding military life challenging, he would appreciate any warm words from passersby.
Jungkook echoed Jimin’s sentiments, thanking military members for their support and recognizing the attention he received from them.
This followed the earlier discharge of fellow bandmates RM and V, who were also warmly welcomed at a gathering in Gangwon. RM, reportedly part of the military band, celebrated with a saxophone performance, receiving flowers from fans.
While they spoke about their experiences, RM emphasized the dedication of service members, stating, “There were tough moments that helped highlight how our freedom relies on those protecting the country.” He expressed gratitude to fans for their patience, indicating excitement about returning to music soon.
V also conveyed well wishes for soldiers, hoping they remain safe during their duties. He expressed a commitment to become a better person after his military service.
The first members, Jin and J-Hope, previously completed their service, with Jin celebrated upon his discharge last June through a sax performance of “Dynamite.”
Suga remains the last member on active duty, expected to complete his term as a social service agent soon.
Though BTS isn’t explicitly political, the group has voiced opinions on various issues, including military relations. They faced criticism in 2020 when RM acknowledged U.S. troops for their contributions during the Korean War, which displeased some groups who favored the opposing side.
In 2020, RM received the James A. Van Fleet Award for contributions to U.S.-Korea relations, highlighting the shared history between the two nations.
The band also took a stand against anti-Asian hate crimes in 2022. During their visit to the White House, Jimin declared the need to use their platform to speak against such issues.
Following their engagement with Biden, BTS announced a pause in their musical activities, revealing they were feeling overwhelmed and needed a break from the industry.
