The Bucks are facing a challenge regarding Giannis Antetokounmpo’s playing status.
According to recent reports, the NBA is investigating the team for potentially violating the league’s “statements that may be inconsistent with the player participation policy.” This was noted by ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Interestingly, the Bucks have chosen not to provide medical treatment for Antetokounmpo, who suffered a hyperextended knee on March 15. Despite this, the two-time NBA MVP has expressed confidence in his health and readiness to return to play.
“You know who you’re dealing with,” Antetokounmpo remarked to reporters. “For someone to come to me and tell me not to play or not to compete, it’s like a slap in the face to me. So I don’t know where the relationship goes from there.”
He added, “I’ve never seen a player of my caliber say that in public. I definitely want to play. If we’re looking into this, that’s fine; it needs to happen. I guess we’ll just have to see what unfolds.”
Charania also mentioned that, according to the Bucks, Antetokounmpo declined to participate in a 3-on-3 scrimmage as part of his recovery. The star player has told the league he feels fit enough to return to action.
Recently, the National Basketball Players Association hinted that the Bucks might be pulling back healthy players from games, calling it “tanking,” especially given their 30-47 record and lack of playoff contention.
The association underscored that the Player Participation Policy exists to ensure that All-Stars like Antetokounmpo are available to play when they are healthy.
In the days following the injury, it was reported that the Bucks suggested to Antetokounmpo that he might sit out the rest of the season, but he pushed back, eager to get back on the court.
This situation appears to be creating some tension between Antetokounmpo and the Bucks, the team that drafted him 15th overall in 2013 and won a championship with him in 2021.
There’s been a lot of talk about Antetokounmpo’s future, with rumors swirling about a potential move away from the franchise he’s been with his entire career. Before the trade deadline, the Bucks decided to stick with him. He has been averaging 27.6 points and 9.8 rebounds this season over 36 games.
Furthermore, Bucks co-owner Wes Edens mentioned he didn’t want Antetokounmpo to play next season without first securing a new contract, especially since he has one year and a player option left on his current three-year, $186 million extension signed back in 2023.
