Faith and Football: Bucky Irving’s Baptism
On Sunday, right before a home game, Bucky Irving, a running back for the Tampa Bay football team, was baptized, marking yet another moment of professional athletes openly sharing their Christian faith.
Irving’s baptism took place in the morning at a local church, just hours ahead of his team’s matchup against New Orleans at Raymond James Stadium.
A video of the event is making rounds online, capturing Irving as he stood in the baptismal water and shared his personal testimony before being immersed.
“About two months ago,” he recounted, “I felt like I hit rock bottom in my life, and the only person I could turn to was God.” His words resonated with many in the audience.
He wasn’t alone in this journey. Other players, such as Travis Hunter from Jacksonville and Marchioness “Hollywood” Brown from Kansas City, also took the plunge this fall.
Irving has become more vocal about his beliefs after experiencing the tragic loss of his 15-year-old brother to gun violence in 2022, an event that deeply affected him.
Reflecting on that pain, he shared in an Instagram video, “When my brother was killed, I really took advantage of my faith. God has a different plan for each of us, and while we don’t know what that is, we just have to carry it.” He emphasized the legacy he feels he carries for his brother: “I know he’s watching over me, and I’m sure he’d be proud.”
Irving has expressed that he believes God supports him through challenges. “I never question what God has given me. As long as I wake up every day, I read the Bible before touching my phone. God knows the journey I’m on,” he stated, expressing gratitude for each day.
His Instagram profile underscores this commitment, where he encourages fans to strengthen their own faith.
“We focus too much on the wrong things in life,” he noted. “We need to come together and love each other, following the path of Jesus.” He’s determined to break free from his previous isolation: “God is real.”
Irving was picked up by Oregon State in the fourth round of the 2024 draft.
