Tampa Bay Buccaneers Part Ways with Desmond Watson
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are reportedly parting ways with defensive tackle Desmond Watson, who holds the title of the heaviest player in the NFL. His absence from practice has been attributed to issues regarding his weight.
Sources indicate that the Buccaneers will finalize this decision before the 4 PM roster cut deadline on Tuesday.
Watson, who went undrafted this past spring after playing college football in Florida, had joined the Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent. At his school’s pro day in April, he weighed in at 464 pounds but managed to shed 25-30 pounds leading up to the draft.
Unfortunately, he hasn’t been able to participate in practice, failing to lose enough weight to meet the team’s standards. He ended up on the non-football injury list during training camp.
“He’s still working. His job isn’t finished,” said Watson’s agent, Eji Gonzalez, as he communicated with the Associated Press.
The 6-foot-6 defensive tackle worked with a nutritionist over the summer, although the team has not publicly stated what his ideal weight should be.
Watson previously shared his challenges with weight management, noting that he often stopped for food while in Florida. He mentioned, “Stop while driving,” when reflecting on some bad habits he was trying to break. “It’s just about getting where I need to go, and there are all these tempting places. It’s been quite helpful for me.”
This situation certainly adds another layer to the challenges that young athletes face as they navigate the professional arena. The Buccaneers’ move might come as a disappointment, but let’s hope Watson finds a path forward that suits him better.
