Buffalo Newspaper Guild Cancels Event Amid Safety Concerns

The Buffalo Newspaper Guild has decided to cancel an event that was intended to support local journalism. This choice was made on Thursday due to safety issues following backlash over a cartoon from the Buffalo News that depicted supporters of Texas during severe flooding.

Critics are pointing to a cartoon by editorial cartoonist Adam Zyglis, which sparked significant outrage, particularly among conservative circles. The backlash included threats directed at Zyglis, prompting heightened concerns for his safety and that of his family.

In a tragic context, southern Texas has been grappling with a catastrophic flash flood, leading to at least 82 fatalities and numerous people reported missing. The cartoon in question illustrated a man donning a red MAGA hat struggling in floodwaters and displayed a speech bubble stating, “The government is not a solution, it’s a problem.” This imagery inflamed conservative critics further.

The guild expressed firm condemnation towards those using threats to silence voices like Zyglis’s, emphasizing that such actions undermine the free press. They stated that the mission to uphold freedom of speech should not be met with intimidation.

As a result of the threats, the planned event to honor Zyglis has been postponed. Zyglis took to Instagram to comment on the situation, stating, “Tonight’s event at the Buffalo History Museum has unfortunately been postponed due to safety concerns. The threats I face are an unacceptable response to opposition against my work.” He also emphasized that violence has no place in a democratic society.

Amid this controversy, some voices claim that liberal officials and pundits are politicizing the tragedy in Texas, with accusations directed at President Trump and others regarding the causes of the flooding. The Buffalo News continues to be the primary news source for western New York, striving to deliver accurate information to the community.
