Buffett shows strong support for new CEO Greg Abel in a CNBC interview.

Berkshire Hathaway’s Leadership Transition

Warren Buffett recently shared in an interview with CNBC’s Becky Quick that he is looking for fresh perspectives. He noted that Berkshire Hathaway’s new CEO, Greg Abel, oversees his own investments more extensively than any leading investment advisor or CEO in the U.S.

Buffett’s investment in the company stands at an impressive $147.5 billion. With Abel at the helm of Berkshire, he will essentially manage a considerable portion of Buffett’s substantial wealth.

A few days later, during an interview I had with Buffett in May, he mentioned that he intends to resign from his role and will continue as the board chair. He also expressed his desire to maintain a presence in the office every day.

Abel addressed shareholders at Berkshire’s annual meeting in Omaha, Nebraska, earlier this month.

During the interview, Buffett emphasized Abel’s capability as a “decision maker,” stating that Abel could achieve more within a week than he could in a month. He praised Abel’s integrity, mentioning he is not a “crooked person,” even while managing a workforce of 400,000, and believes the company has a strong chance of thriving for another century.

Although Buffett won’t be presenting at the upcoming annual meeting, he indicated that Quick could be interviewed during CNBC’s coverage.

Viewers can catch parts of the discussion on CNBC, where Buffett commends Abel’s skills and character. He humorously suggested that his endorsement of Abel might be exaggerated but remains sincere.

Later the same day, segments of the interview were rebroadcast, along with insights from CNBC’s Michael Santoli on the transition at Berkshire.

Berkshire’s Stock Performance

Interestingly, on Abel’s first trading day, Berkshire’s stock saw a dip. Since the beginning of the year, there’s been a 1.60 percentage point lead of the S&P over Berkshire stock. With dividends taken into account, that lead expands to 1.62 percentage points.

In 2025, the S&P outperformed Berkshire’s A-shares by 7.0 percentage points.
