A tragic video captures a young bullfighter’s fatal first performance, leaving the audience in shock.
At just 22, Manuel Maria Trindade made his debut in Lisbon’s Campo Pequeno Bullring, performing in front of approximately 7,000 spectators. During his act, he boldly confronted a 1,500-pound bull.
As he began to run at the animal, things took a turn for the worse. Attempting to grab a horn to rein in the bull, he ended up being thrown across the ring.
Other bullfighters rushed to help but were unable to mitigate the bull’s aggressive charge, as it continued to attack those still on the ground. In a desperate move, they tried to divert the bull’s attention by grabbing its tail and shining bright lights in its eyes.
Despite immediate medical assistance, Trindade suffered severe head trauma and was declared brain dead upon arrival at the hospital. He also went into cardiopulmonary arrest and tragically passed away the next day.
In a grim twist, a 73-year-old orthopedic surgeon in the audience fell ill shortly after the incident and died in the hospital, suspected to have suffered an aortic aneurysm. There’s some speculation about whether witnessing the deadly performance contributed to his health crisis.
In response to the online trolls celebrating her son’s death, Trindade’s mother, Alzira, wrote an open letter criticizing their insensitivity. She questioned their knowledge of her son and asserted his love for animal welfare.
She expressed gratitude to those who supported her son for his bravery and skills, emphasizing that participants in their group did not harm the bulls but engaged with them adeptly.
Portuguese bullfighting is known for being less lethal than its Spanish counterpart, where animals are often killed. In this sport, the goal is to subdue or tire out the bull without causing it injury.
While protective padding is typically used on the bull’s horns to minimize harm to contestants, it remains unclear if such precautions were taken during the recent tragedy.
Despite its less violent nature, the sport has faced calls for bans from animal rights advocates and some leftist political groups.
