Bulls' top draft choice Caleb Wilson breaks unofficial NBA Summer League record

Chicago Bulls Find a Potential Franchise Cornerstone in Summer League Debut

The Chicago Bulls might have finally found a key player for their future after a period of uncertainty.

In his first game at the NBA Summer League, the No. 4 overall pick, Caleb Wilson, had an incredible showing. The former University of North Carolina standout scored 35 points, marking what many consider the highest-scoring debut in Summer League history—though it’s worth noting that this isn’t an officially recognized record given the league’s somewhat inconsistent record-keeping over the years.

Along with his scoring, he pulled down five rebounds, recorded three blocks, and made two steals. Not to forget, he nailed 7 of 11 three-pointers, which showcases a diverse offensive skill set that makes him one of the most exciting prospects heading into the 2026 NBA Draft.

An interesting fact: Wilson made as many three-pointers in his Summer League debut (seven) as he did throughout his entire college career, where he never managed to hit more than one in a single game against the Tar Heels.

In this game against the Grizzlies, they also had the No. 3 overall pick, Cameron Boozer, a former Duke star, who scored 23 points in his own Summer League debut. Wilson clearly stood out, surpassing other top picks during their face-off. In contrast, Keaton Wagler, the No. 5 pick, had a rough start, hitting only 1 of 7 shots (1 of 5 from three) and finishing with just seven points in a lengthy 27 minutes.

Yet, Wilson’s performance was more than just about the numbers. He was aggressive at the rim, opened up space on the floor, and transitioned well from defense to offense. His defensive instincts seemed to suggest he could be a two-way player right from the start.

Fans of the Bulls can find hope in Wilson’s athleticism and scoring ability across the board, which should complement the growing young talent of the team. If he keeps working on that outside shooting, he could evolve into one of the league’s most versatile forwards.

However, there’s always a flip side. Wilson did have some struggles too; he had six turnovers during the game, which is a bit concerning.

After the match, Wilson’s attitude surely won over some fans. Instead of basking in his own success, he emphasized the team aspect, saying, “We lost. My goal is to come here and win.” He even criticized himself for missing box outs and piling up turnovers.

As the Bulls enter the offseason, there’s cautious optimism that they might have drafted a future star. If this Summer League performance is a glimpse of what’s to come, we might just be scratching the surface of Caleb Wilson’s potential in Chicago.
