North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum (Republican) announced Monday that he will not seek re-election and will resign at the end of his second term on Dec. 14.
“Serving as Governor and First Lady of the great state of North Dakota has been one of the most wonderful and rewarding experiences of our lives. Kathryn and I are deeply honored to serve the state we love. I am forever grateful to the people of North Dakota for giving me this opportunity twice,” Burgum said in a statement.
Burgum's announcement comes after his name gained national attention after his failed presidential campaign. Recently, he joined the campaign in support of former President Trump's return to the White House.
Burgum, 67, did not say in his statement his next steps professionally or whether he would retire from public life.
The statement praised his accomplishments in the state, including infrastructure investments, support for the agriculture and energy industries, and efforts to combat the stigma surrounding addiction treatment.
“There has never been a better time to live, work, and raise a family in North Dakota. Thanks to the efforts of everyone at Team ND to empower people, improve lives, and encourage success, our state We are extremely well positioned for the future,” Burgum said in a statement.
