Buttigieg: Biden’s SOTU address showed a leader ‘in command’

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg on Sunday praised President Biden’s State of the Union address, saying everyone watching it felt the president was “in command.”

In an interview on “This Week” with ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos, Buttigieg dismissed criticism of Sen. Katie Britt’s (R-Ala.) rebuttal of Biden’s State of the Union address.

Buttigieg responded to Britt’s rebuttal by saying, “We know that these response speeches have to be written before the State of the Union is actually released. Usually, the responses are based on what actually happened during the speech. I don’t think he will change his speech.”

“But everyone who saw that speech saw, not only in what President Biden said, but in what he said, a leader who showed strength, vision, and command,” Buttigieg said. He continued.

When asked about how the 81-year-old Biden could be a “transformational” candidate, Buttigieg mentioned the adage that what matters most is how old a leader’s ideas are, and that climate It highlighted Biden’s positions on change, LGBTQ equality and reproductive freedom.

“Look at the changes he’s brought about. Let’s take some of the most important issues for a new generation. Climate is a great example, right? He generously said that climate change is real and a real problem. I think he suggested that no one in the room disagreed with him that that was the case. And yet some Republicans in the background were laughing and saying they didn’t think that was a problem. “I heard it,” he said.

“So it’s a good example of the saying that what matters most is the age of a leader’s ideas,” he added.
