Buttigieg Criticizes Trump’s Leadership After Fatal Shooting
Former U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has expressed concerns over the lack of leadership from the Trump administration, particularly following the recent fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk.
During an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Buttigieg reacted to a video posted by President Trump on Truth Social after announcing Kirk’s death. In the video, Trump pledged to locate everyone involved in the incident and address political violence, emphasizing the need to identify organizations that support such actions.
Buttigieg asserted that the White House has fallen short in uniting the nation.
“We haven’t received the leadership necessary to connect this country with the White House,” he stated, stressing the importance of rejecting those who perpetrate or glorify political violence.
He further argued that the American response shouldn’t focus on punishing individuals or groups challenging the government politically, as long as they do not engage in violence.
“It’s crucial for us to have open political discussions and healthy processes in this country,” he continued. “Importantly, most Americans—whether on the left, right, or in between—believe that the government shouldn’t suppress political opponents merely because of their views.”
In connection to the shooting, a 22-year-old resident of Utah, Tyler Robinson, is currently being investigated as a suspect.
In the wake of Kirk’s death, Trump has continued to lash out at the “radical left,” claiming their rhetoric plays a direct role in the violence witnessed across the nation.
“I want to see this nation heal,” Trump stated in a recent interview. “But we’re facing a radical group on the left that, frankly, is unreasonable.”
However, Buttigieg challenged the notion of a clear left-right distinction among shooters. “There’s no consistent pattern based on political alignment,” he noted, adding that many perpetrators tend to be young men who increasingly delve into dark corners of the internet.
