Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg called on former President Trump to show solidarity with the six immigrant workers killed in the Baltimore bridge collapse last month.
“I’m going to be careful to avoid talking about the campaign while I’m sitting here, but on a human level, it’s important to note that most, if not all of us, It will be helpful to show the kind of solidarity that we’ve seen from people, all elected officials on both sides of the aisle, because what happened is of a human nature,” he said Sunday on MSNBC. He spoke on “Inside with Jen Psaki.”
MSNBC host Jen Psaki said President Trump has not acknowledged the death of a road worker filling a hole when a giant container ship crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore late last month. It pointed out. Six of his eight men working on the bridge that night were killed in the collapse. All were immigrants.
“We’re counting on so many workers in this country, many of them immigrants, to fill critical infrastructure jobs. They’re not attractive. “It’s not the best-paying job in the country, but it’s absolutely essential,” Buttigieg said.
“And I think again it’s very important to show some respect for that on a human level. And when I was with President Biden in Baltimore on Friday, I think that’s President Biden’s signature behavior. “It was,” he added.
President Biden and President Buttigieg visited Baltimore on Friday, more than a week after the bridge collapsed. Biden spoke with the remains of the bridge in the background, vowing to “move heaven and earth” to rebuild the structure.
Lawmakers have been at odds over how to spend money on rebuilding bridges ever since Biden pledged federal funding to rebuild them. Some conservatives say this is a regional issue, while some liberals say ship owners should pay for some of the repair costs.
The container ship, named Dali, was en route from the Port of Baltimore to Sri Lanka last Tuesday when it lost power and crashed into a bridge. The ship’s owner and management company asked a federal judge last week to limit liability in the case.
The Hill has reached out to the Trump campaign for comment.
