Congressman Byron Donald Reflects on His Faith Journey
Congressman Byron Donald (R-FL) opened up recently about his path to faith, specifically how he dedicated his life to God while he was employed at a Cracker Barrel restaurant many years ago. Donald, who is currently running for the Republican nomination for Florida governor and has received an endorsement from former President Trump, shared this personal experience.
“For you, this may just be a Cracker Barrel parking lot, but for me, it’s the place where I gave my life to Jesus Christ,” he recounted, reflecting back to when he was 21 years old and working in Tallahassee during a tumultuous time in his life. “I was coming out of a really tough situation, having made a significant mistake,” he said.
He described his upbringing in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, where his hardworking mother instilled in him resilience. “I made a choice that almost ended my story before it truly began. By God’s grace, I’m here today. Yet, I carried the weight of that decision every day.” One afternoon, a group of church members came into the restaurant after attending a revival. As he served them, he felt something shift within him. “The Lord spoke to me, saying, `Stop running away from me.` That really hit me hard,” he reflected.
When he went to check on them later, the group was leaving. He watched as they boarded the bus and felt a pull to confront his feelings. Just before they departed, one woman asked, “Are you okay?” He admitted to her, “No, ma’am, I’m not okay. The Lord’s prompting me to stop running.”
Standing in that empty parking lot by himself, he experienced a profound moment of prayer with that woman, ultimately leading him to dedicate his life to Christ right then and there.
Since then, Donald has expressed gratitude for the blessings he has received: a devoted wife who shares his beliefs, three sons, and a meaningful career. “He took a kid from a challenging background and granted him a life focused on grace,” he wrote, adding that divine encounters can happen anywhere—”you just have to stop running.”
Social media reactions were swift following Donald’s post, with some expressing admiration for his story. Comments highlighted the importance of sharing the light of faith and noted how divine messages often come at unexpected moments.
On May 18, it was also reported that Donald holds a significant lead in the gubernatorial primary race, according to a poll conducted by the Institute for Public Sentiment.
