BYU Women’s Basketball Team’s Journey
The BYU Cougars women’s basketball team aimed high this season, targeting a spot in the NCAA Tournament with a solid record of 26-12 under coach Lee Cumard.
They played strongly enough to receive an invite to the Women’s Basketball Invitational Tournament. After a victory over the Kansas Jayhawks last week, they faced the Columbia Lions on Wednesday but unfortunately fell short.
Interestingly, prior to their 70-67 win against Kansas State, the team chose not to practice because it was Sunday, a decision driven by their religious beliefs. Delaney Gibb, the leading scorer, shared that this day provides them a unique perspective on life beyond basketball.
“For us, it signifies something greater than the game itself,” Gibb remarked, emphasizing her belief in Jesus Christ as the foundation of their values.
In that close game, Gibb scored 12 points, while teammate Sidney Benally added 15. Gibb’s comments gained traction that week, resonating with many.
However, the Cougars faced disappointment in their following match against the Lions. Looking ahead, Gibb is expected to return for her junior season and has already made a mark, being named to the All-Big 12 Conference First Team after earning the title of Big 12 Conference Freshman of the Year the previous season.
This past season, Gibb demonstrated her talent, averaging 18.3 points and 5.1 rebounds per game, showcasing her crucial role on the team.
