A bill introduced Friday by California Rep. Mike Gipson (D) would require insurance companies to submit annual reports to lawmakers disclosing whether homeowners have guns in their homes. It is mandatory.
This bill, AB 3067, To tell: “This bill would require insurance companies, by January 1, 2026, to include on their homeowner or renter insurance application any firearms stored in the home, accessory structures, or We plan to require the inclusion of questions asking for specific information regarding the presence and storage of vehicles on property covered by applicable insurance policies.”
Additionally, “This bill would require insurance companies to report this information annually to the Department of Insurance and Congress beginning January 1, 2027, and would prohibit the inclusion of sensitive personally identifiable information in the reports. It is.”
The bill then includes step-by-step instructions for insurance companies to follow to obtain the information that Gipson and his primary co-author, state Sen. Catherine Breakspear (D), are seeking. has been done.
In addition to existing regulations, applying for homeowners or renters insurance includes questions about all of the following:
(1) Whether firearms are stored in the home (including in accessory structures) and, if so, how many.
(2) If the firearm is present, whether the firearm is stored in a locked container in the home, including any accessory structures, while not in use.
(3) The number of firearms stored in vehicles on the premises covered by the applicable insurance policy and whether they are securely stored in locked containers while not in use.
AB 3067 is currently pending referral to the Committee for continuation.
