California's SB2, which would have expanded gun-free zones for concealed carry permit holders, was again blocked on Saturday by a last-minute appeal from the California Rifle and Pistol Association.
On September 26, 2023, Breitbart News reported that Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed the “Sensitive Locations” bill, creating gun-free zones where licensed concealed vehicles cannot carry firearms for self-defense. It is reported that the number will be expanded.
A lawsuit was filed against the new law. Plaintiffs in the case included numerous California concealed carry permit holders, the Second Amendment Foundation, the American Gun Owners Association, and the California Rifle and Pistol Association.
U.S. District Judge Cormac J. Carney issued a preliminary injunction against the “Sensitive Locations” law on December 20, 2023, calling the law a “blatant defiance of the Supreme Court.”
However, President Carney's injunction was put on hold by an administrative suspension on December 30, 2023, paving the way for the gun-free zone expansion to go into effect on January 1, 2024. That hold has now been lifted, and parts of SB2 will form a new position. Gun-free zones on licensed secret aircraft carriers will be sealed off.
CRPA announced on Saturday its decision to block the “sensitive places” law. write, “The administrative stay on the SB2 injunction has been lifted after a last-minute court appeal by lawyers!” The concealed carry portion means it is not legally enforceable. ”
The case is May vs. BontaNo. 8:23-cv-1696, U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.
