White House Weighs Cabinet Member for Press Briefings After Resignation

The White House is reportedly exploring the idea of having a Cabinet member take over the press briefings following the resignation of Caroline Levitt from her role as press secretary.

Shelby Talcott, a White House correspondent for Semaphore, shared in her newsletter that this option is being considered.

“This was a temporary arrangement that worked for President Trump when Ms. Levitt was on maternity leave, and now White House officials have indicated to Semaphore that it’s being revisited until a new permanent press secretary is chosen,” Talcott noted.

During Levitt’s maternity leave, the White House didn’t appoint an official interim chief. Instead, various figures like Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and Dr. Mehmet Oz from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services addressed the press.

If the White House opts to reinstate this practice, it stands to reason that some of these officials—or others capable of commanding the James S. Brady press briefing room—might step up to take on that responsibility.

Interestingly, the current situation might place less urgency on the White House compared to prior administrations to quickly fill the press secretary position. This is largely because Trump regularly engages with reporters, often taking questions several times a week.

In fact, as noted by Breitbart News earlier this year, Trump was involved in nearly 500 media events in 2025, engaging with the press in about three-quarters of them.

For example, he answered questions during 134 press sprays, all 15 general meetings, and 14 press conferences. Additionally, he interacted with the media on 31 occasions on Marine One and during 41 and 28 gaggle sessions inside and outside Air Force One, respectively. It appears that in many ways, he is already quite adept at being his own spokesperson.

Recently, Trump expressed his belief to Fox News’ Alexis McAdams that Levitt is irreplaceable.

When asked about finding someone to take her place, Trump stated, “No, she isn’t. She really isn’t. She’s right there and she’s done a great job.” He then humorously added, “It turns out she likes her kids more than President Trump, which worries me a lot.”
