2026 FIFA World Cup: Cape Verde’s Underdog Journey

The 2026 FIFA World Cup showcased a remarkable underdog story that will be remembered for years. With the expansion to 48 teams, Cape Verde participated for the first time, facing off against two powerhouse nations—Argentina, the number one ranked team, and Spain, ranked second at that time.

Surprisingly, neither Argentina nor Spain could clinch a win against Cape Verde, which, it’s worth noting, has a population of around 530,000. During the round of 32 on Friday, Cape Verde nearly eliminated Argentina after a dramatic 2-2 draw that required extra time.

Although the match ended with a 3-2 victory for Argentina, Cape Verde’s performance was commendable and memorable.

In the group stage, Cape Verde played against Spain, Saudi Arabia, and Uruguay, with all matches resulting in draws.

This tournament made Cape Verde the smallest nation ever to reach the World Cup finals, highlighted by their fierce competition against Argentina.

A standout player for Cape Verde was goalkeeper Josimar José Évora Díaz, affectionately known as Vosinha. At 40 years old, he had an outstanding game against Argentina, achieving seven saves, a perfect dribble success rate, and a 100% win rate in ground duels, among other impressive stats.

Vosinha first gained attention during the opening match against Spain, where he made an impressive seven saves from a staggering 27 shots. This performance not only solidified his place in the spotlight but also drastically increased his social media following, culminating in over 18 million more followers by the end of the tournament.

Regardless of the ultimate winner of the World Cup, Cape Verde’s unforgettable journey will certainly leave a lasting impression on the tournament’s history.
