Caitlin Clark didn’t aim to get a technical foul in Game 2 against the Aces, but she also didn’t act like she was particularly worried about it.
With elimination looming, the Fever rallied around Clark, who set the tone early in an emotional, high-energy game. She delivered an impressive performance with 27 points, 15 assists, and seven rebounds, guiding the Fever to a 99-89 victory and forcing a decisive Game 3.
“The way I looked at it, your back’s up against the wall,” Clark mentioned. “This is the only opportunity you’re guaranteed to have is these 40 minutes. You’re going to go down swinging if you’re going to lose. But I think we had the mentality like this is one we’re going to win no matter what.”
“It was really about doing it for our fans, getting back in front of them with fire and passion. I think that’s exactly what we did,” she added.
Clark is no stranger to technical fouls, but Tuesday’s incident felt different. After a disappointing performance in a blowout loss in Game 1, she wanted to make sure the Fever was anything but soft in this game.
She came out strong, hitting her first three-pointer just 15 seconds in. But Indiana found itself trailing after the first quarter. Then, she received her technical foul 90 seconds into the second period, with the Fever down 29-20. However, just three minutes later, after Clark scored or assisted on every basket during an 11-2 run, Indiana had closed the gap to two points. A couple of minutes after that, they took the lead with a fast-break layup from Mitchell, capping off a 16-4 run overall.
“I think that’s where we really lacked in the first game, and we talked about it as a team— don’t be soft,” Clark reflected. “We beat ourselves in that game. Sure, Vegas played great, but we didn’t match their intensity. Tonight, we really had that.”
The Fever didn’t ease up, even stretching the lead to 15 points in the third quarter. As has been the case for them recently, Indiana let Vegas chip away at the lead with an 8-0 run, shrinking the margin to just five points in the fourth quarter.
Clark stepped up again, nailing two three-pointers in the fourth to restore the lead to double digits both times.
Ultimately, the Fever had to finish the game without her, as she had accumulated six fouls, with her final one coming at 2:45 left while Indiana was ahead by nine.
Key baskets from Aliyah Boston and crucial free throws from Kelsey Mitchell helped the Fever secure the win and push for a Game 3. Both played significant roles, with Mitchell scoring 26 points and Boston contributing 22 points, four rebounds, and five assists.
This was the first time Indiana’s Big 3 had all scored 20 points in the same game since late August.
“I think the efficiency with which they shot was really impressive,” commented head coach Stephanie White regarding the trio. “There’s a clear correlation when the ball moves like that, and they shared it well. It improved the quality of their shots. Caitlin did a fantastic job of orchestrating our offense.”
Despite all her achievements, Tuesday marked just Clark’s fourth career postseason game and her first playoff victory. In Game 1, she had seemed to be still finding her footing in the postseason atmosphere. But on Tuesday, she appeared ready and in sync.
She now faces her first win-or-go-home game. If Game 2 is any indication, Clark will undoubtedly be prepared for the challenge.
“Her energy was incredible from start to finish—a double-double in the first half, that’s pretty phenomenal,” said White. “You expect her to not just score, but also facilitate. I thought she managed the game exceptionally well.
“She was the catalyst for us tonight. I believe she’ll elevate her game even further as we head into Game 3,” she concluded.
