Caitlin Clark becomes NCAA women’s all-time leading scorer

Arguably the greatest women’s college basketball player of all time has cemented her legacy.

Iowa State superstar Caitlin Clark became the NCAA women’s all-time leading scorer Thursday night against Michigan.

The eight points Clark needed to break the record were probably the easiest eight points of her life.

She achieved success by knocking down each of her first three field goals, but watching her break that record was something to behold.

Clark pulled out of the logo’s range like a prayer, but to her, it was just a shot. That’s a real net, and she surpassed Kelsey Plum’s 3,527 points for Washington from 2013 to 2017.

As Coach Clark had hoped, Michigan did not immediately stop the game even after possession of the ball after the shot, but as the University of Iowa got the ball back and called for a timeout amid thunderous applause, Clark called for a timeout. I was able to take advantage of it.

Oh, that was just a preview for the seniors. She dropped her 23 points in the first quarter, making 8 of 10 shots (she was 5 of 7 from 3-point land).

Clark may now have another record in mind: NCAA points records for both men and women.

She currently ranks third behind Antwaun Davis (3,664) and “Pistol” Pete Maravich (3,667), with Iowa entering its final regular season game against No. 2 Ohio State on March 3. He is on pace to outpace Maravich.

But for Clark, it’s effectively a question of when, not if, he’ll break the record. After Iowa State’s final five games of the regular season, the Hawkeyes will play in the Big Ten Tournament and will likely advance quite far. Then there’s the Women’s March Madness Tournament, where they get to compete in earnest again.

Ticket prices for Thursday’s game soared, with the Associated Press reporting that the average ticket price on TickPick was $394.

According to the Des Moines Register, Iowa State was forced to suspend season ticket sales for the 2023-24 season due to an influx of demand ahead of the senior season.
