Caitlyn Clark’s Challenging Season in the WNBA
Caitlyn Clark faced a tough season during her sophomore year in the WNBA, dealing with injuries and frustration. After Indiana was knocked out by the Ace in the semi-finals on Tuesday night, she spoke to reporters about her experiences.
“I’ve been really putting in the effort to get back to feeling 100%,” Clark mentioned. “Lately, I feel like I’ve started to find my groove again, but my ankles have been… well, let’s just say they weren’t cooperating.” She has been sidelined with various leg issues since mid-July.
Earlier this season, she injured her left quad and then, unfortunately, fell to injure her right groin on July 15. Then in early August, while training, she sustained a bone bruise on her left ankle.
“I attempted a move during practice, and my ankles just, well, they twisted in a way that led to one of the worst sprains I’ve encountered,” Clark explained. “I tried to keep a positive outlook, but honestly, it’s been tough. People don’t often realize how much injuries can affect you. You feel different when you’re not out there playing.”
This season, Clark has managed to participate in only 13 games, averaging 16.5 points and 8.8 assists per game. Last year, she played in every game without missing a beat.
“There have been definitely some challenging days for me,” she reflected. “I’ve learned a lot about leadership and how to bond with teammates, especially when emotions run high. When you’re right in the middle of a game, it’s intense, but being on the sidelines allows you to observe things more closely.”
Unfortunately, the two-time All-Star’s season came to an early end as the Fever sought a playoff spot. In a post on X, Clark communicated, “We hoped to give a better update, but we aren’t going to be playing anymore this season.”
Both Clark and Sophie Cunningham faced season-ending injuries, but the Fever came close to defeating the Ace, which could have led them to a spot in the WNBA Finals against the Mercury.
