Caitlin Clark Ventures into Broadcasting

Caitlin Clark seems to be swapping her basketball shoes for a microphone this offseason.

The star of the WNBA is stepping into a new role by joining NBC Sports as a special contributor for NBA broadcasts. This marks the first time the Indiana Fever player and anticipated No. 1 pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft will be involved in broadcasting on a regular basis. NBC is launching “Basketball Night in America,” with Clark expected to be at the Los Angeles Lakers versus New York Knicks game on February 1.

However, that is contingent on signing a contract.

Unlike many of her peers, Clark isn’t participating in any offseason leagues. Unrivaled has kicked off its second season in Miami, while Athletes Unlimited is set to begin soon in Nashville. Numerous players are also entrenched in their seasons overseas in places like Europe, China, and Australia. There were whispers that Clark had an offer from Unrivaled but chose not to take it.

Clark isn’t alone in this journey, as several WNBA players have embraced broadcasting during the offseason. Notable figures like Candace Parker and Kia Nurse, along with Clark’s teammate Sophie Cunningham, have pursued similar paths. It will be intriguing to see how Clark adapts to commentary instead of focusing solely on her game performance. Outside of career press conferences and podcast discussions with the Kells brothers, she hasn’t had much public speaking experience.

Transitioning can be tricky for athletes, so many might be curious about her broadcasting style. This new medium will definitely demand a different approach to discussing the game. Sometimes, players, particularly those still on the court, may hesitate to critique their peers, opting for vague compliments instead. Conversely, Parker and others who have moved into analysis show that Clark might provide detailed insights that enhance the broadcast. It’s hard to predict where Clark will land—she certainly has a passion for the game. Perhaps that passion will translate into insightful commentary.

Moreover, Clark won’t be featured in every NBC broadcast; currently, only her appearances on February 1 and March 29 are confirmed, although additional dates could emerge. Rest assured, she isn’t stepping away from basketball, as she plans to return for her third WNBA season in 2026. Maybe this broadcasting gig is just a first step toward her next chapter?

NBC has secured one of basketball’s biggest names for its new show. It remains to be seen if she will emerge as one of the most captivating personalities. Only time will tell.
