Caitlin Clark minimizes the serious foul on Angel Reese in Fever’s victory against Sky

In the opening game of the 2025 WNBA season, Kate Clark, a standout player for the Indiana Fever, kicked things off with a triple-double during a match against the Chicago Sky, which ended with a score of 93-58 in favor of the Fever.

During the game, there was quite a stir when Clark was penalized for a foul on rival Angel Reese. Clark was immediately met with anger from the Sky players, leading to a heated exchange that required intervention from teammates. Clark walked away, seemingly unfazed by Reese’s presence still on the court.

Despite the tension, both players later downplayed the incident. Clark, who recorded 20 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists, said, “Let’s not make it something it’s not. It was just a basketball play.” She expressed confusion over why the referees escalated the situation and stated, “I didn’t mean any harm; that’s not my style.” Her perspective highlights an understandable uncertainty in contentious moments.

The foul occurred as Reese was grabbing an offensive rebound, and Clark, perhaps instinctively, fouled her to prevent an easy basket. There was some discussion on the ESPN broadcast about whether Clark’s shove of Reese was intentional. Reese described it, without elaboration, as simply a “basketball play.” She had a tough shooting night, finishing with 12 points on 5-of-14 shooting, but managed to grab an impressive 17 rebounds.

This altercation adds another chapter to the ongoing rivalry between Clark and Reese, which started during their college careers. Now, it seems that their teams, the Fever and the Sky, have adopted this rivalry too.

Looking back at last season, the Fever won three of their four matchups against the Sky. Stephanie White, the Fever’s head coach who celebrated her first win, commented on the foul, emphasizing a tough defensive mindset, stating, “No one gets an easy shot against us.” White added that Clark’s actions met the criteria for a Flagrant 1 foul, noting that the contact felt unnecessary.

In the aftermath of the foul, the crowd at Gainbridge Field House responded eagerly, particularly when Reese missed her first free throw after a technical foul. This moment—though brief—was filled with the energy of competition and rivalry, encapsulating the rivalry’s intensity.
