Caitlin Clark must beat juggernaut for March Madness glory

CLEVELAND — Caitlin Clark’s senior season was full of questions.

How many points will she score today? How far away did that shot come from? Did you see that?

Will she return to Iowa? What records will she break? Will she be affected by the unprecedented spotlight? How much will she grow her game?

With one game left in her legendary college career, only one question remains. Will she make it to the top?

The all-time leading scorer in Division I history heads into Sunday’s title game against South Carolina with a chance to give his home state its first national championship. They also have a chance to avenge last year’s title loss to LSU. And you need a ring to take part in the all-time debate, where you have 40 minutes left to silence all the critics who argue.

“Everyone came to me before the season started and was like, ‘There’s only one thing left to do,'” Clark said. “Whether I win or lose, I don’t want it to end like this. I think the biggest thing is that I have a small flame inside of me. I’ve experienced some tough losses, but now, with this opportunity, I think it prepared me for what it was like.”

Few players have ever wagered more on a single game.

Few teams have been given the chance to play No. 1 South Carolina (37-0) and No. 1 Iowa (34-4) in a rematch.

It was a year ago that the Shamcocks reached the Final Four with a perfect record and looked like they could repeat as champions.

Clark went on to become America’s favorite sweetheart and assassin, leading the Hawkeyes to an upset of the nation’s top-ranked team with an unforgettable performance of 41 points, eight assists, and six rebounds in a 77-73 victory over the University of Iowa. I won.

Some of South Carolina’s players are still feeling the effects of the loss, making Clark the confetti of the nation’s celebration.

Shamcocks guard Raven Johnson admitted he watched the video of the loss “over 100 times.”

“I remember being so nervous to guard last year.” [Clark]I’m just being myself, but this time I’m not scared,” Johnson said. “I definitely wanted a rematch. There’s no better feeling than beating the team that beat me last year. Beating them will complete the revenge tour.”

Mr Clark may make the final decision.

In the Elite Eight, she had 41 points (nine 3-pointers) and 12 assists, getting revenge on Angel Reese and LSU.

In the national semifinals, Clark’s fourth-quarter magic helped them defeat Paige Bueckers, Geno Auriemma and the UConn program that has dominated the sport for years.

Then comes the most fitting final boss, and a scripted ending to the story is within reach.

“This is a monumental game for our game,” said South Carolina coach Dawn Staley, who is seeking her third national title and the sport’s first undefeated season in seven years. “We hope this will be the most watched match.” [ever]. I hope everyone gets exactly what they want from this work. ”

South Carolina appears to have been built within the laboratory to prevent Clark from cutting the net. They have one of the top defenses in the country, slowing down the offensive line that has the highest score in the country.

They have a dominant front line featuring 6-foot-7 center Camila Cardoso to attack Iowa’s small lineup. They bring the deepest rotation in the country against an opponent without a bench.

South Carolina has it all, except for one player who stands above all else when he steps on the court.

There’s only one thing left for her to do. She has only one question left to answer.

“I don’t think you could have asked for anything more from this matchup,” Clark said. “We know we have our hands full. Everybody in the country knows that South Carolina has been this team all year long. They’ve been really great. We’re going to give it everything we have.

“[A championship] It’s probably the cherry blossom at the top. That should be at the top of your list and what you will be most proud of. ”
