WNBA star Caitlin Clark added Time Magazine's Athlete of the Year to her list of accolades, claiming she has benefited from white privilege.
Clark, who plays for the Indiana Fever, made wide-ranging comments. interview Times will be announced on Tuesday.
“If we can uplift more black women, that’s going to be great.”
“I'd like to say I've got it all, but as a white person I'm privileged,” Clark says.
“A lot of the really good players in the league were black players. This league is kind of built on them. I think if we value it more and highlight it and talk about it more and brands and companies… “If we can continue to invest in the players that have made this league great, I think that's really important,” she added.
“I have to keep trying to change that,” Clark continued. “If we can uplift more black women, that’s going to be great.”
Although Clark has been praised by her supporters, many of her critics argue that her popularity is another manifestation of white supremacy. In an interview with Time, he quoted another player as saying that support for Clark from the white community was “fanatic and territorial” and sometimes even “racist.”
Clark continued in the interview that he is happy to see more support for the sport.
“It feels powerful,” Clark says. “Everyone goes crazy right away. People are into the game, they love the game, and that's what makes the game so fun to me. We're not supporting women's sports. That's going to be the new normal.”
The iconic athlete made headlines in September when she liked Taylor Swift's message on women's issues and supporting Vice President Kamala Harris as a presidential candidate. When asked about the issue, Clark said only that Americans should inform themselves and decide for themselves who they support for president.
