Caitlin Clark scores 32 points as Fever gives Liberty their first loss of the season

INDIANAPOLIS – Stephanie White, the director, shared some encouragement for Caitlyn Clark as she prepares for her return to the Fever after being sidelined due to an injury for three weeks.

“Be kind to yourself,” White advised. “It might take a bit to get back into your rhythm.”

It seems White may have underestimated Clark’s capability, though.

Saturday marked Clark’s return, and despite her time off, she looked fit throughout the season.

In the second quarter, she made five three-pointers, racking up a total of 20 points.

Alongside that, she grabbed four rebounds, recorded three assists, and received a technical foul for expressing her frustrations with the referees.

Clark’s impressive 32-point performance helped the Fever secure a victory over the defending champions, Liberty, with a score of 102-88.

Her determination was evident, signaling that she was definitely on a mission.

When they last faced the Liberty at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, they managed to come back from a 12-point deficit in the fourth quarter, snatching a two-point victory.

However, Clark was challenged by Natasha Cloud during the final play.

Post-game discussions included disputes over a foul called on Clark.

In contrast, Cloud maintained that it was simply a clean play.

Clark had a brief moment of reflection as the previous game’s intensity lingered before this match.

“This is a great chance for us to show that we belong among the best,” she noted. “They’re champions for a reason; everyone recognizes their talent.”

The Fever also showcased Clark’s strength, especially with her back on the court.

Indiana welcomed Sophie Cunningham too, who had been absent due to an ankle injury.

However, the team wasn’t at full strength as Dewanna Bonner had to step away for personal reasons.

Yet, that didn’t seem to hinder their performance.

The Fever’s offensive lineup was potent, featuring Clark, Kelsey Mitchell with 22 points, and Lexihull contributing 14.

Sabrina Ionescu had an impressive showing, scoring 27 of her season-high 34 points in the first half, including three three-pointers.

This match was the first time Liberty trailed at halftime this season.

Though Liberty appeared to regain control in the third quarter, the Fever responded sharply with a stunning 19-0 run.

During that stretch, Clark either scored or facilitated 17 points.

In the fourth quarter, with Liberty closing the gap to just three points, it became clear that the Fever were determined not to let the game slip away.

Clark celebrated excitedly when Mitchell sunk a corner three-pointer with just over two minutes left, energizing the crowd.

Fans stood in anticipation as the clock wound down.

Clark ended the night with 32 points, nine assists, and eight rebounds in just 31 minutes.

The Fever will look to regroup as they prepare to host the Dream on Tuesday.
