Caitlin Clark shines as Fever disrupt Liberty's unbeaten season

Indiana Fever Defeats New York Liberty

New York’s reign was shattered, and Caitlyn Clark played a crucial role in that surprising turn. After returning from an injury, Clark lit up the scoreboard, leading the Indiana Fever to a 102-88 victory over the reigning champions, the Liberty.

The Liberty entered the game undefeated at 9-0, initially asserting dominance with an 11-point lead in the first quarter. But then, Clark, who had missed five games due to a quad injury sustained against the Liberty just a few weeks prior, turned the tide.

She kicked off the game by making six of her first nine three-pointers, accumulating 25 points by halftime. Her performance included a spectacular stretch reminiscent of Reggie Miller, where she hit three deep shots in just 38 seconds, pushing Indiana to a 53-50 lead at the break.

As the second half began, New York momentarily surged ahead with nine unanswered points. Yet, the Fever quickly retaliated, unleashing a remarkable 19-0 run, and building a 16-point lead. Despite the Liberty’s efforts to claw back into the game, narrowing the gap to just four points on a 14-2 run, Indiana responded yet again, scoring 17 of the next 21 points to regain a commanding 16-point lead.

In the latter part of the game, Clark’s earlier shooting prowess dwindled; she managed only seven points in the third quarter and struggled with her shooting in the second half. However, her teammates, including Lexie Hull, Damiris Dantas, Sidney Colson, and Sophie Cunningham, managed to maintain the momentum by sinking seven of 11 three-pointers. The Fever set a franchise record with 17 made threes, contributing greatly to their victory.

Clark concluded the game with 32 points, just shy of a double-double, pulling down eight rebounds and adding a single assist. While Indiana improved to 3-2 after being 2-3 during Clark’s absence, all losses were by narrow margins of just three points.

The Fever will host the Connecticut Sun next, while New York prepares to return home for a matchup against the Atlanta Dream.
