But after an 0-5 start from the field, Clark made five of his final 10 shots from the field and scored 13 points, including three 3-pointers in the second half. Trailing by 20 points, the Fever remained within sun’s reach for much of the night until a second-half push by Connecticut moved the game.
Dijonai Carrington had a big performance, scoring 16 points against Clark’s excellent defense. Alyssa Thomas opened the year with a triple-double for the Sun with 13 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds, while DeWanna Bonner tied with Clark for game-high scoring honors with 20 points.
Alyssa Thomas said of DeJonai Carrington, who helped force Caitlin Clark into 10 turnovers tonight.

The night was a mixed bag in terms of results for Clark. After finishing 5-15 on her field goals and poor shooting overall, she struggled with turnovers all night, making 10 against a stifling Sun defense. He recorded just three assists. Last season, the Sun ranked second in the league in defensive rating.
However, her 20 points were just three points shy of the franchise record for most points in a debut, set by Tamika Catchings (23 points). Her scores, including her total of four 3-pointers, also resulted in her finishing the night among the elite group.
Tuesday was quite a tough opening test as the Fever’s young players are still finding their way. And with back-to-back games against Liberty, including Clark’s home opener on Thursday, things won’t get any easier for the Fever in the short term.
But while it’s far from the best start for the Fever, there’s certainly plenty of room for growth. And Tuesday also showed that Clark can find a way to produce at a high level, even on nights when he’s having a lot of struggles.
In many ways, Tuesday was a microcosm of what Clark has become this season. It’s a bump in the road with signs of possibility scattered along the way.
The challenge for her and Indiana going forward in their rookie campaign will be to get more consistent production in the second half to avoid ups and downs, and hopes to pick up more wins in the process.
