Fever Season Unfolds with Player Injuries

The current season for the Fever has been marked by a slew of injuries, and unfortunately, another noteworthy player has been added to that list.

Kate Linklark, who hasn’t played since mid-July due to a significant groin injury, announced on social media Thursday evening that she will not be returning this season. Over the course of this year, she has only participated in 13 games, as injuries have taken a toll on her performance.

During a Thursday practice session, Indiana’s head coach, Stephanie White, painted a rather bleak picture regarding Clark’s condition after the team returned from a challenging four-game trip on the West Coast.

“We had hoped to use this trip to assess her progress,” White mentioned. “We’ll meet after practice and aim to have some clarity soon. The hope is to figure out a direction.”

While on that road trip, Caitlin managed to train with her teammates, participating in warm-ups and shootarounds. However, White mentioned that this was about the extent of her involvement.

“She wasn’t able to engage in much contact,” White explained. “She did some shooting drills, but could not really push it physically.”

As the end of the season approaches, reintegrating Clark into a team vying for a playoff spot poses significant challenges. The Fever have had to adapt their playing style, particularly as injuries continue to mount.

This season, key players like Sophie Cunningham, Ahri MacDonald, and Sidney Colson have all been sidelined for weeks, compounding the team’s difficulties. Just before Thursday’s practice, the Fever revealed that Chloebie, who was recently signed on a hardship contract, will also be out for the rest of the season. Even coaching staff members have been affected by season-ending injuries.

Clark’s knee injury earlier in the season prompted immediate adjustments within the team. Upon returning, she had an impressive game against Liberty, where she scored 32 points, helping the Fever secure three wins in five games.

Unfortunately, another groin injury sidelined her for an additional two weeks, forcing the Fever to recalibrate once more. Upon her return, Clark boosted the team again as they secured three consecutive victories. However, just days before the All-Star Game, she re-aggravated her injury late in a game.

Her more focused approach to rehabilitation has meant the Fever have had to adapt to life without her. As the season winds down, the question shifts from “When will Caitlin Clark return?” to “Is she coming back at all?”

Despite the absences, including that of Clark and many other players, Indiana is still contending for a playoff spot, albeit with tougher competition for one of the final postseason berths.

This situation is quite a contrast to the start of the season when conversations revolved around championship aspirations. Unfortunately, injuries—especially Clark’s—have left a lasting mark on this season.
