Caitlin Clark swaps coaches with Cheryl Reeve in WNBA All-Star Game

WNBA All-Star Game Coaching Swap Shocks Fans

Kate Linklark was really enthusiastic about the lineup for the WNBA All-Star Game. But, the coaching situation? That was a whole different story.

In a surprising move—one that raised questions about whether it was even allowed—Clark decided to trade Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve for Liberty coach Sandy Brondello, alongside Team Collier.

Reeve had been slated to coach Team Clark during the showcase set for July 19. However, Clark and Nafisa Collier made the decision to swap coaches unexpectedly, announcing it during the WNBA All-Star Draft being aired on ESPN just before the game against the ace.

“Honestly, I’m not sure if this is against the rules. I mean, I don’t really care,” Clark stated. “I think we were both in agreement to trade coaches. I’m taking her coach. Let’s bring in Sandy Brondello; that would be incredible. If that’s not okay, I guess I’ve just created a new rule,” she added lightly.

Continuing with a hint of humor, Clark said, “Sandy Brondello, come on! I can coach Sabrina [Ionescu]. Maybe even Breanna Stewart could come to my team.”

The announcement led to a flurry of buzz on social media, with WNBA tweeting, “🚨Trade warning🚨 Caitlin Clark and Napheesa Collier have decided to trade coaches!” This means Reeve will lead Team Collier while Brondello takes charge of Team Clark.

Clark playfully nudged Collier to “let her know” if the Liberty star was open to switching teams. Since Collier plays under Reeve for the Lynx, this swap allows her a chance to play alongside her during the All-Star Game.

While the coaching trade is remarkable for its unusual nature, it also reflects ongoing discussions about Reeve’s relationship with Clark. Previously, Reeve had posted about a preseason game featuring Clark and the Fever, using hashtags like #TheWismMorethanOnePlayer.

In the past, Reeve responded to fan comments hinting that attention was overly focused on Clark, subtly acknowledging that some of that indeed had merit. It’s worth noting that Reeve also leads the US Olympic women’s basketball team and faced surprise when Clark was excluded from the Olympic roster.
