Controversy Surrounds WNBA Coach’s Comments

After head coach Sandy Brondello was suspended for remarks about Angel Reese, Toronto Tempo center Temi Fagbenle spoke out in her defense. The incident occurred during a game where Tempo lost 111-92 to the Atlanta Dream. Nyara Sabally of Toronto was called for a foul on Reese after an offensive rebound, prompting Brondello to comment to a referee, “Angel, she’s a protected species!”

Reese reacted on social media, asking, “Are you surprised?!” Following this, the WNBA handed Brondello a one-game suspension.

In response to the suspension, Fagbenle took to social media, tackling the issue and mentioning her former teammate Caitlin Clark. She argued that Brondello’s use of the term “protected species” did not deserve a suspension. She acknowledged the negative connotation of using “seed” alongside the phrase, particularly in today’s climate, but maintained that if it had been directed at Clark, she wouldn’t have been outraged.

Fagbenle referred to the reaction as “laughable,” questioning the severity of the consequences faced by Brondello.

Brondello expressed her regret for her words, stating that in the emotional moment following Nyara’s injury, she chose her words poorly. She emphasized her responsibility for how her comments impacted Reese, particularly highlighting the implications they had for Black women in the league. “I understand my words transcended my intentions,” she noted.

She extended her apologies to Reese, her teammates, and the Dream organization, expressing deep respect for the community affected by her statements.
