WNBA Discussion Centers Around Caitlin Clark

Caitlin Clark is back in the spotlight of the WNBA after a recent on-court incident involving a heated exchange between her team, the Fever, and the Sun.

A former coach of Clark, Lisa Bluder who guided her for four seasons at Iowa, suggests that changes are necessary in the WNBA’s physicality and overall game appeal.

Bluder believes this likely means enforcing more fouls. “I think our game needs to have more freedom of movement,” she stated. “Yes, calling more fouls might annoy some people, but, well, players will adapt.”

She highlighted that increasing fouls could encourage players to be more cautious on the floor.

Bluder clarified that she doesn’t think Clark was specifically targeted, but noted that the opposing team’s physical approach was likely just a strategy to counter the standout player.

Recently, Clark had a confrontation with Yassie Sheldon from the Sun, which escalated quickly. After a brief exchange, Clark charged at Sheldon, leading to an altercation involving Tina Charles and Marina Mabry, the latter of whom pushed Clark down to the ground.

Following the fracas, all three players received technical fouls, while Sheldon was ejected later for an earlier aggressive play against Sophie Cunningham.

In a review of the incident, Mabry’s foul was upgraded to a Flagrant 2, and she also received a fine.

After the game, Fever head coach Stephanie White criticized the officiating, arguing that the referees allowed the game to become too chaotic. “When officials don’t keep control, it leads to situations like this,” White commented. “You’ve got competitive athletes here, and if they’re permitted to play rough, it’s bound to lead to conflict.”
