New York Liberty Faces First Loss of the Season
new york – The New York Liberty kicked off the season with a setback against the Indiana Fever, which, although disappointing, led head coach Sandi Brondello to reflect on the broader significance of the game beyond just the score.
The Fever, powered by an impressive performance from Kate Linklark, handed the defending WNBA champions their first defeat with a 102-88 victory. Linklark achieved a remarkable 32 points, nailing seven three-pointers, while Liberty’s Sabrina Ionescu matched her own season-high by scoring 34 points.
Interestingly, this matchup caught more viewers than expected. ESPN reported that it was the third most-watched WNBA game on ABC, drawing an average of 2.2 million viewers. The peak audience reached 2.8 million, marking a spectacular increase of 76% compared to last season’s average.
Brondello addressed reporters ahead of the upcoming game against Atlanta. She recognized the importance of viewership milestones, expressing a desire for the game to be tightly contested, while appreciating the growing audience. “I love the attention. We’ve been striving for this since the league’s inception,” she stated, “It was a thrilling game, and Caitlyn really shone.”
In fact, Saturday’s game viewership continues the trend from last season, which saw the WNBA achieve its highest average attendance in over two decades. Much of this success can be attributed to Clark’s standout rookie season, during which she set a record for the most assists in a season and became the first rookie in league history to score two triple-doubles.
The league’s rapid growth is drawing ratings that are competitive with other major North American sports. Brondello emphasized, “If more people experience our game, they’re likely to fall in love with it—this truly is exceptional.”
