Clark nearly made WNBA history with a triple-double. She contributed 15 points, 12 assists and nine rebounds in the win. She drilled a 3-pointer with 5:48 left in the third quarter to cut the deficit to five points. An assist to Wallace kept the Mercury lead at five.

Kelsey Mitchell also gave Indiana a much-needed boost, hitting a jump shot with 36 seconds left to give them the lead that turned out to be the deciding factor. She finished with 16 points.

Aliyah Boston led the Fever with 17 points. She also had eight rebounds and four assists.

The match with Mercury was billed as a rookie versus veteran bout to promote Clarke’s matchup with her childhood idol, Diana Taurasi. To add intrigue, Taurasi warned Clarke that “reality is going to set in” when she turned pro this year.

As the Fever left Phoenix victorious, reality was staring them in the face at the Footprint Center.

Taurasi had 19 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals. Brittney Griner led the Mercury with 24 points and six rebounds.

Indiana improved to 8-12 this season and currently sits eighth in the WNBA standings, placing them in the running for a playoff spot if they qualify on the final day of the regular season.
