Cincinnati Reds Struggle in Recent Games
Things are only getting tougher for the Cincinnati Reds. After a promising start to the season with a record of 20-12, they have stumbled to a 25-43 record over their last 68 games, including an 8-0 defeat against the Seattle Mariners on Monday night.
During the game, a particularly frustrating moment occurred in the bottom of the seventh inning, following a grand slam hit by Cal Raleigh that really dampened the Reds’ spirits. They couldn’t catch a break even after that moment. Mariners outfielder Victor Robles hit a ground ball toward short, and in an attempt to make a play, second baseman Edwin Arroyo found himself obstructed by umpire Bill Miller, which caused the ball to roll into the outfield, getting past shortstop Elie Delacruz as well.
Caleb Ferguson, the relief pitcher, was evidently upset by the umpire’s interference. He expressed his frustration rather loudly, yelling at the umpires and even making accusations about his performance being influenced by their actions. It seems he was directing some heated comments towards Miller, shouting, “Fata, fata! Get out of my way, Mom.” That’s quite the outburst, don’t you think?
The situation escalated with the Mariners having runners on the corners. Reds manager Terry Francona made the call to intentionally walk Dominic Canzone to face Raleigh with the bases loaded. However, things took a turn for the worse. Raleigh, who had been struggling this season with a batting average of just .163, seized the opportunity, hitting a home run to left field, which pushed the score in Seattle’s favor. This was his tenth homer of the year, pretty significant considering the context.
Francona reflected on the decision with a bit of humor, saying, “I know Rory’s hitting, but I’m still worried. But I thought that was our best chance of not letting them score. We kept the infield double play depth, and then the worst happened.”
With this win, Seattle has taken the lead in the American League West, boasting a record of 51-50. After a run to Game 7 of the American League Championship Series last year, they seem eager to chase more success this season.
