Caleb Hood from UNC steps back as Bill Belichick faces a tough season.

No matter how Bill Belichick’s inaugural season at UNC unfolds, one significant player won’t be part of it.

With various rumors swirling around the Tar Heels, redshirt senior running back Caleb Hood announced his retirement from football on Friday, just five games into the 2025 season.

“After a lot of reflection, prayer, and talking it over with my family, I’ve decided to hang up my cleats,” Hood shared on Instagram. “My time at UNC has been incredibly special, and I’m thankful for everything. I’m looking forward to what’s next, but I’ll always hold onto my memories from Carolina. A big thank you to Coach Belichick, Coach Kitchens, Coach Means, and everyone else who’s shaped my journey in football.”

It’s uncertain if Hood’s decision is related to the challenges currently facing Belichick and the UNC program.

Throughout his four-plus seasons at UNC, Hood dealt with numerous injuries.

A remnant from Mack Brown’s coaching staff, he wrapped up his playing days this season with 16 carries for 44 yards and a touchdown, along with 515 yards from 24 receptions, which included three rushing touchdowns.

“Caleb came to me on Wednesday to tell me about his tough choice to retire,” Belichick said in a statement. “I felt a sense of peace regarding his faith and his decision. He’s a wonderful person, a leader, and has been a fantastic teammate. He’s pushed through injuries in the past and has worked diligently to stay fit and be competitive this season. He’ll always be a Tar Heel, and I wish him nothing but the best moving forward.”

For Belichick, this episode adds another layer to a season fraught with challenges for UNC.

From the onset of his college life, Hood and his girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, have often found themselves at the center of media scrutiny regarding their relationship and her role in his public appearances.

The situation intensified this week after a significant loss to Clemson, which pushed their season record to 2-3.

Reports regarding Belichick’s future have suggested discussions about “exit strategies,” along with allegations that transfer players scouted by him were receiving favorable treatment—like preferential parking, game tickets, and leniency on class and practice attendance.

Additionally, Hulu has reportedly scrapped a docuseries focused on his first season with the Tar Heels.

The situation was further complicated by cornerbacks coach Armond Hawkins being suspended over an extra pay scandal.

Despite the uncertainty, Belichick and UNC Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham released a joint statement expressing their commitment to collectively strengthen the program.

Now, Belichick also faces gaps in his roster.
