Trademark Trouble for Bears’ Quarterback
Caleb Williams, the star quarterback for the Bears, has hit a snag in his attempt to trademark the name “Iceman.” According to records from the USPTO, his application has been denied.
The USPTO found that the name was too similar to a trademark registered in 1988 by LaCrosse Footwear, which has rights to “Iceman” for its insulated boots and boot liners. This raises the probability of confusion among consumers.
The examination report noted, “These trademarks are identical in appearance, sound, and meaning. Furthermore, because these marks are identical, they are likely to create the same connotation and overall commercial impression when considered in connection with the applicant and registrant’s respective goods and/or services.”
Williams aimed for trademarks in various areas, including clothing, but faced a broad rejection.
Beyond clothing, he also sought trademarks for sports bags, water bottles, sporting goods, websites, and entertainment services. As trademark attorney Josh Garven explained, “They are claiming a connection to the other products in Caleb’s application. Even though Caleb is focusing on shirts, hats, pants, and so on, they’re insisting it’s all about insulated boots.”
Garven pointed out that such rejections aren’t unusual, noting that over 63.5% of initial trademark applicants face some form of denial.
That said, inconsistencies in the decision don’t necessarily discredit all of them. Williams still has the option to appeal, and Garven believes he could make a strong case if he chooses to go that route. “The registration they’re citing is for a very limited product line—it’s just insulated boots,” he noted. “While that could complicate his bid for ‘Iceman’ as a clothing brand, other elements in his application might still be approved.”
Interestingly, Williams attributes the “Iceman” nickname to former teammate DJ Moore during an appearance on the “New Heights” show hosted by Jason and Travis Kelce. The name likely reflects both his composed demeanor in critical game moments and his celebratory expressions when he mimics a cold vibe.
