Calif. inmate who escaped prison camp 13 years ago captured in NYC

He had a good run.

A California inmate who escaped from prison nearly 13 years ago was finally recaptured in New York last month, authorities recently revealed.

Eduardo Hernandez, 42, was serving a sentence for armed carjacking when he escaped from a Delta conservation camp before dawn on Nov. 15, 2011. According to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

Hernandez, who has been in custody in New York City for more than a decade without incident, was released on May 20 and will be extradited to California to re-enter prison, corrections officials said.

California authorities have not released details about the arrest, and an email sent to the NYPD was not responded to Sunday night.

Hernandez’s case will be turned over to the Solano County District Attorney’s Office for possible escape charges.

The fugitive began his 13-year sentence on August 4, 2005, having served six years of it before his escape.

He and another prisoner were last seen at approximately 4:30 a.m. on Nov. 15, 2011, at the minimum-security Delta Conservation Camp in Suisun, wearing orange flame-colored jeans and shirts with “CDCR Prisoner” written on the back. CBS News Sacramento reported at the time.

Jose Padilla, the inmate who escaped with him, remains at large. The Los Angeles Times reported.

The prison where Hernandez was serving his sentence is run jointly by the Department of Corrections and the state Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

“The camp’s primary mission is to provide incarcerated firefighters for fire suppression in the Sonoma, Lake and Napa Units and Solano County areas,” the state Department of Corrections said. He stated.

“However, crews may be deployed throughout the state. In addition to fire suppression, incarcerated crews provide labor for conservation projects.”

Corrections officials said that since 1977, 99 percent of inmates who “left an adult facility, camp or community-based program without authorization” have been arrested.
