The city of San Francisco in California has launched a new controversial speeding ticketing program, issued fines based on revenues, in the name of “fair.”

The Speed Safety System Pilot program, supported by California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.), allows cities across the state to use speeding cameras to fine drivers.
The new program offers 50% discount eligibility for individuals below 200% of federal poverty levels, according to the San Francisco City Transportation Agency.
Homeless individuals are eligible for an 80% discount on speeding tickets in the city.

The city of San Francisco launched the program on March 20th, which was signed into law by Newsom in October 2023.th – Start by installing 33 cameras in the city, designed to catch speeding drivers.
A fact sheet detailing the new initiative says that the camera is “equivalently distributed throughout San Francisco – reflecting the diverse socioeconomic composition of the city.” The program is intended to benefit all communities, not specific regions. ”
Speeding drivers will receive warnings from the camera during the first 60 days of the test program. However, after 60 days, any recorded speeding violations will be subject to a fine. If someone drives a car for more than 11 miles with speed limit, they will be infringed.
“The penalty is proportional to the speed at which the driver progresses. Drivers will catch them driving 15 mph from 11:00 am at 11:00 am at the posted speed limit. There is a $50 quote.
The cameras are also reportedly set to target “highly injured” areas, or 12% of streets within the city.
