A 12-year-old boy who wanted a challenge graduated from college in California last week with five historic degrees.
Preteen Clovis Han is the youngest student to graduate from Fullerton University, according to the university.
Hung started attending the school in the fall of 2020 when he was just nine years old, but his mother expelled him from traditional public school, claiming he was very self-motivated and goal-oriented. .
“Clovis is very curious, mature, hardworking, self-disciplined and highly motivated,” Hung’s mother Song Choi said in a statement released by the school. . “He was also very curious and conventional public schools could not satisfy his curiosity, so college was his best option.”
Fullerton offers a ‘special admissions program’, which allowed Hung to take school courses while completing the homeschool curriculum taught by his mother.
Hung said he was initially apprehensive about taking college courses face-to-face, but he quickly fell in love with college life. So I challenged myself to take more classes. “
Some of Hung’s professors were worried that the boy would be intimidated by his classmates because of the age difference, but they were surprised at how well traditional university students treated Hung. He said he was surprised.
Fullerton biology professor Kenneth Collins said: “Given the age and developmental differences, I was a little worried at first about how he would interact with other students, but those concerns were unwarranted.” . “Clovis is the perfect blend of ‘kid’ and college student. He’s adult enough for the other students to take him seriously, but he’s kid enough that they care for him like his little brother and cheer him on. “
“If they have questions, they will ask them, and if they have questions, they will ask me.” Hung told KABC. “They treated me like a little brother.”
Fullerton College is a public community college in Orange County, about 30 miles from Los Angeles, and part of the California Community College System.
After acclimating to university life, Hung took more classes and was eventually admitted to an honors program, where he was able to ‘grow up’.
Hung, who graduated on May 20 along with 900 other Fullerton University alumni, earned five associate arts degrees in history, social sciences, social behavior and personal development, arts and human expression, and science and mathematics.
After 13-year-old Jack Rico graduated from the school in the spring of 2020 with four associate degrees, 12-year-old Jack Rico decided to attend Fullerton University. Rico has since graduated from UNLV in December 2021.
Hung was elected as an associate-student senator next year and plans to take STEM courses before starting to apply to college.
Outside of school, Mr. Hung is looking to the sky for his next achievement.
Hung’s career goals include becoming an aerospace engineer, pilot, and pediatrician. According to ABC7.
“I am really proud of what we have achieved so far,” Hung said. “I also just joined the Civic Air Patrol and hope to get my pilot’s license when I turn 16.”
