A resident of a wealthy Southern California neighborhood shot and killed a home invasion suspect Tuesday morning, police said.
The homeowner shot and killed the suspect inside a gated home in coastal Newport Beach, authorities said.
“This crime appears to be a targeted incident where there was a past connection between the suspect and victim,” police said in a statement.
Newport Beach police officers responded to a residence at Pelican Hill Road and Newport Coast Drive around 4:45 a.m.
Police said the 911 caller said he shot one of the suspects inside the home.
When officers arrived, they found one of the suspects lying in the street holding a handgun and suffering from a gunshot wound.
The suspect was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Details of the suspect’s injuries and medical condition were not disclosed.
Investigators also found a second suspect in the bushes near the home with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the four people inside the home at the time of the break-in were unharmed.
“If you are thinking of coming to our city to commit a crime, please know that we will protect you,” Newport Beach Mayor Will O’Neill said in a video statement.
