California Pushes Diesel Big Rigs to the Curb: Full Ban by 2036

Diesel heavy rigs form the backbone of the U.S. commercial road transportation industry, and their days are coming to an end, at least in California.

On Friday, state regulators also passed new rules banning the sale of new diesel heavy-duty rigs by 2036 and requiring all trucks to be zero-emission vehicles by 2042.

The announcement comes on the same day that CARB enacted regulations requiring “zero-emission” trains to be introduced after 2030, as reported by Breitbart News.

UPI report The Advanced Clean Fleet Regulation, the first in the world to mandate that new commercial trucks, including garbage trucks, delivery trucks and other medium and heavy vehicles, be electric, unanimously approved By the California Air Resources Board (CARB).

“This is a completely transformative rule to clean our air and mitigate climate change,” said Board Chairman Rian Randolph. according to of mercury news.

Environmental groups have applauded new rules to keep diesel heavy trucks off the roads, while CARB is working on a number of other measures to ban the use of fossil fuels in many other areas.

“I don’t think there was a single rule that said the technology wasn’t ready, the cost was too high, or it wasn’t the right time to listen,” the American Lung Association said.

“But the urgency to clean our air and tackle the climate crisis is irresistible.”

Industry groups criticized the decision, the UPI report said.

“CARB completely ignored the fleet that represents the United States and put forward an overly ambitious, unrealistic and unrealistic proposition,” said Eric Sauer, CEO of the California Trucking Association.

Sauer added that the new rules “will ensure the complete dismantling of the state’s trucking industry, adversely affecting the movement of goods and the supply chain as a whole.”
