Cam Newton Critiques Drake Maye’s Performance
Cam Newton recently shared his thoughts on Drake Maye, the New England Patriots quarterback, during his podcast “4th & 1 With Cam Newton.” He referred to Maye as a “game manager,” raising some eyebrows in the football community.
Newton acknowledged Maye’s talent and energy but pointed out issues that might impact his performance. “Drake Maye has a lot going for him. He’s energetic and talented, with the right skill set,” Newton said. “However, last year saw a head coach get fired, and it’s worth asking—where is Jerod Mayo now? The offensive coordinator, Alex Van Pelt, is no longer with a team in the league. So, while I appreciate Maye, we can’t call him a game changer just yet.” He emphasized that success also relies on the team, not just one player.
Earlier, back in November, Newton labeled the Patriots as “fool’s gold,” crediting their achievements more to the system than to Maye. Maye, for his part, responded on WEEI radio, expressing confusion about Newton’s comments, saying, “I don’t even know what show he’s on.”
Maye has his own view on public opinions and is more focused on what his teammates think. “I think they’re paid to say certain things. What matters is my organization’s thoughts and my teammates’ perspectives. Everyone will have their opinions, but I’m just focusing on what I need to do on Sundays,” he remarked.
Amidst this chatter, arguments are brewing. Stephen A. Smith, a commentator on “First Take,” labeled Maye a liar, suggesting he’s out of touch with Newton’s show. Despite this, Maye has had a commendable performance—leading the team to an AFC East title, an outside shot at the No. 1 seed, and even emerging as a contender for MVP honors. He’s completed 4,203 passing yards with 30 touchdowns and just eight interceptions, including an impressive five touchdowns against the Jets last week. As the regular season wraps up, he has one last opportunity to enhance those stats in the game against the Dolphins.
