Cam Newton Reacts to Philip Rivers’ NFL Return

Cam Newton was taken aback, even a bit angry, when Philip Rivers made his return to the NFL this week. The former MVP expressed his feelings during an episode of his show, stating that being bypassed for the Colts in favor of Rivers felt like “a slap in the face.”

Newton, 36, was quite candid, saying, “I’m not even going to lie.” He explained that while he hadn’t told general managers he was ready to come back, the signs were apparent if you looked closely.

For instance, Newton mentioned that his Snapchat activity could be seen as a hint. Oh, and, of course, he never officially submitted his resignation from the game. He added that Rivers, with his impressive résumé, shouldn’t need to broadcast his availability for a return, considering he has never had to do that before.

“Has Philip Rivers sent any signal that he’s available?” Newton questioned. “Why do I have to do something no one else has?” He was quick to emphasize, “I’m not a lab rat,” adding a sense of incredulity to his response.

Rivers, who last played in the 2020 season, officially signed with the Colts recently. Although his longstanding relationship with head coach Shane Steichen may have played a role in the surprising decision, Newton felt that wasn’t the sole reason he wasn’t considered for the spot.

Newton articulated, “I don’t care if he’s in their family. He’s 44 years old, brother.” He speculated that perhaps the media attention surrounding him might have led the Colts to choose otherwise.

“It’s personality, brother,” he stated. “People don’t want a circus.” This shift meant Newton missed yet another chance to pursue his dream, along with the potential for a regular paycheck. If Rivers makes it onto the Colts’ active roster, he stands to earn at least $73,800 per game, with even greater earnings possible through incentives.

As of now, it isn’t clear if Rivers will take the field in the upcoming game against the Seahawks in Indianapolis.
