Mets Face Tough Loss Against Yankees

Cam Schrittler’s chance to shine came as he faced the Mets, marking his Subway Series debut. The game on Friday wasn’t easy for the Mets, who were hoping to bounce back from a recent slump.

The Mets struggled in a 5-2 defeat at Citi Field, ending their brief three-game winning streak. The situation worsened for the team when Clay Holmes suffered a fractured right fibula from a blistering 111 mph line drive that struck Spencer Jones’ bat in the fourth inning. Despite the injury, Holmes pitched into the next inning before being sidelined for an extended recovery period.

“Every team is going to deal with adversity,” coach Carlos Mendoza commented. “We must keep moving forward.”

Mendoza didn’t specify who would take over Holmes’ spot in the rotation, although Jack Wenninger, who has been impressive at Triple-A Syracuse, may be a candidate.

Meanwhile, Schrittler contributed to the Yankees’ win, pitching 6⅓ innings. He allowed just one run—thanks to a home run by Juan Soto—while striking out nine batters. His pitch count hit 106, the highest this season, and he maintained a stellar ERA of 1.35.

“In moments like this, there’s a bit of extra pressure, but I’m not intimidated,” Schrittler said. “It’s just a lot of fun being part of this.”

On the contrary, the Mets could only manage five hits throughout the game. Ironically, they had set a record with five home runs the day before, scoring 22 runs across their previous three games. But it felt like a completely different team on this night.

With two outs in the second inning, Brett Batty gave the Mets their only hit until Soto’s home run in the seventh. Schrittler has been particularly tough, allowing one or fewer runs in four straight starts.

As for Holmes, he pitched just 4⅓ innings, giving up four earned runs from seven hits, with two walks and eight strikeouts. The injury came after he allowed back-to-back singles and then a damaging two-run double that put the Yankees ahead.

“It’s really unfortunate what happened to him,” Soto remarked. “It’s part of the game, but we’re here to support him however we can.”

After giving up the heart-stopping line drive, Holmes walked three batters before finally being replaced in the fifth by Austin Warren. By then, the Yankees had built a solid lead.

Soto later made his mark again in the seventh, hitting his second home run of the night, marking his 250th career homer.

In the ninth, Rice added another home run against Craig Kimbrel, which increased the Yankees’ lead to 5-1 and showcased Rice’s impressive form this season.

Despite a rocky outing, Bednar held the Mets to just one run in the ninth after a solid eighth inning by Cruz. There was a tangible buzz in the ballpark, and Schrittler was glad for the win.
